FY22 Budget Planning

Overview

Planning for Linn County’s fiscal year 2022 budget is underway. The budget will be developed between November 2020 through February 2021 during a series of more than 20 public meetings (PDF) between the Linn County Board of Supervisors, other Linn County elected officials, and department heads.

Each year, the budget is developed within Linn County’s budgetary and financial policies. The Board of Supervisors strives to maintain a consistent levy rate to minimize any impact to the taxpayer.

Resources for Linn County’s annual budgets are allocated to align with the County’s mission statement, “provide all customers the most satisfying products while maintaining sound fiscal management in order to enhance the quality of life in Linn County.”

Key Dates

  • A Public Budget Forum will take place November 16, 2020 at 5 p.m. The budget forum gives residents the opportunity to address the Board of Supervisors and provide comment on the development of Linn County’s fiscal year 2022 budget.
  • A public hearing for the proposed total maximum property tax dollars is scheduled for March 3, 2021.
  • A public hearing for the proposed FY22 budget is scheduled for March 24, 2021.

All meetings are held at the Linn County Public Service Center, 935 Second Street SW in Cedar Rapids. The public can also join the meetings by phone. Meeting dates, times, agendas, and instructions for joining by phone will be posted on Linn County’s website at least 24 hours in advance of the meetings.

Fiscal year 2022 begins July 1, 2021 and ends June 30, 2022.

Notice of Public Hearing FY22 Proposed Property Tax Levy

A public hearing for Linn County's FY22 proposed total maximum property tax levy (PDF) will take place March 3, 2021 at 11 a.m. at the Linn County Public Service Center, 935 Second St. SW in Cedar Rapids. At the public hearing, any resident or taxpayer may present objections to, or statements in favor of, the proposed tax levy.

Limited seating will be available at the public hearings due to COVID-19 physical distancing protocols. Face coverings are required for anyone attending in person. Residents are encouraged to participate by phone. Instructions for joining the public hearing by phone will be posted on the meeting agenda on the Linn County website 24 hours in advance of the meeting. A recording of the meeting will be posted in the Linn County Agenda Center within 24 hours of the meeting’s conclusion.

Dates and times on the review calendar are subject to change, so be sure to check the Agendas & Minutes section on Linn County’s website 24 hours in advance for the most up-to-date information or subscribe to receive the Linn County Board of Supervisors meeting agendas.

Videos of the budget meetings will be posted to the County’s website after each meeting.

Linn County has successfully maintained its Aaa bond rating (the highest rating possible) and has received the following awards from the Government Finance Officers Association for for consistently meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting and reporting and being responsible stewards of public funds:

  • Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting - 31 consecutive years
  • Distinguished Budget Presentation Award - 24 consecutive years
  • Outstanding Achievement in Popular Annual Financial Reporting - 22 consecutive years
