Township trustees and clerks have historically been elected positions; however, legislation was passed in 1988 allowing these officers to be appointed by the Board of Supervisors, rather than elected by the township voters. Linn County has 19 townships and nine townships continue to elect their officers, while the other 10 have appointed officers. Their duties consist of fire protection, fence dispute settlements, and cemetery maintenance. The terms are four years long.
